Excerpt from Johan Vlok Louw’s New Novel Karoo Dust (Plus: Win a Copy)

Win a Copy of Karoo Dusk

Karoo DuskUmuzi has shared an extract from Johan Vlok Louw’s Karoo Dusk, as well as a competition to win a copy of the book.

In the excerpt Billy begins to adjust to his new life in a small Karoo town with his mother and father, and we gain a subtle insight into the complex family dynamics at play.

Read the extract:

She comes to stand next to me holding half a bottle of Fleur du Cap white by the neck.

‘He’s a splendid dragon, as tattoos go, it’s very cleverly done.’ The two of us stand there watching me and him tower over her in the mirror.

‘My beautiful boy.’

‘Pa hates it.’

‘Ag, what does he know about art?’ She says it slow-slow, meticulously, chemically induced.

‘Ja, Ma, so where’s he gone, anyway?’ I ask.

‘He’s up the hill – over.’

‘Oh, lekker.’

‘Him and a bottle of ten-year-old and his 9-mill with two boxes of ammunition.’

We stand there.

‘Well anyway, each to his own,’ she sighs, tracing the basin with a fingertip. ‘We’re just people.’

To stand a chance of winning a copy of the book, visit the Random House Struik website, fill in your details and answer the following question:

Question: What is the Afrikaans translation of this book called?

A. Die Sirkel van Bekende Goed
B. Die Sirkel van Bekende Dinge
