‘He’s a splendid dragon, as tattoos go, it’s very cleverly done.’ The two of us stand there watching me and him tower over her in the mirror.

‘My beautiful boy.’

‘Pa hates it.’

‘Ag, what does he know about art?’ She says it slow-slow, meticulously, chemically induced.

‘Ja, Ma, so where’s he gone, anyway?’ I ask.

‘He’s up the hill – over.’

‘Oh, lekker.’

‘Him and a bottle of ten-year-old and his 9-mill with two boxes of ammunition.’

We stand there.

‘Well anyway, each to his own,’ she sighs, tracing the basin with a fingertip. ‘We’re just people.’
