Gabriella Versado from Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes Chosen as a “True Detective You Should Know”

Broken MonstersTrue Detective, the American crime series created by Nic Pizzolatto, was one of the most talked about television shows last year, with high praise for both the actors and the storyline.

When it was revealed that the second season would feature a female detective even more people started paying attention. However, there have been mixed reactions to the new season, with most fans saying it simply does not measure up to the first one.

Zack Budryk has written an article for The Mary Sue explaining why he believes Rachel McAdams’ performance as detective Ani Bezzerides was “one of the highlights of the season”, and adding that she “deserved a better season of television to exist in”. Budryk offers fans of the show and genre other similar characters to look out for, calling them “six female true detectives you oughtta know”.

His list includes Gabriella Versado – the leading lady from Broken Monsters, the latest novel by award-winning writer Lauren Beukes.

Read what Budryk has to say about this particular character and his glowing review of Beukes’ work:

I don’t even know where to begin in praising Beukes’ work in general or this book in particular. An awe-inspiring, genre-straddling lovechild of Hannibal, Black Mirror and The Wire, this 2014 novel finds Versado, a single mother and detective in the Detroit PD, pursuing a killer who turns his victims into nightmarish modern art, while struggling to look after her teenage daughter, Layla, who’s gotten into the dangerous hobby of conducting vigilante sting operations against creeps she meets online. Gaby’s strength and badassery don’t manifest in gunplay or tough talk, but rather in the form of her weary, dignified strength as she balances her responsibilities with confronting unimaginable, quite possibly otherworldly evil.
