Nadia Davids Speaks About An Imperfect Blessing – Her “Unapologetically Political Novel” (Podcast)
Nadia Davids spoke to Nancy Richards about her debut novel, An Imperfect Blessing.
Richards said An Imperfect Blessing is a rich book set in the predawn of democracy and is told through the eyes of a very colourful Muslim family.
Davids lives in London but was born in South Africa. She spoke about the memories of her formative years in Cape Town and how they have shaped her writing and her life. She reflected on how leaving South Africa for good affected the way she now writes about her motherland. “As I left I started writing retrospectively,” she said.
Davids started writing An Imperfect Blessing in 2008. “I wanted to write an unapologetically political novel,” she said. Her work has always been informed by the political landscape and she strives to write in a way that is not didactic, but “positions ordinary people at the heart of these quite extraordinary moments”.
