Podcast: Jenny Crwys-Williams and Nadia Davids Discuss An Imperfect Blessing and Writing About Cape Town

An Imperfect BlessingEarlier this year Talk Radio 702‘s Jenny Crwys-Williams spoke to Nadia Davids about her Etisalat Prize for Literature nominated debut novel, An Imperfect Blessing.

Described as one of the most important books to be published this year, the story takes place right before the first democratic elections in South Africa, chronicling the lives of a family living in Walmer Estate, a dynamic suburb on the slopes of Cape Town’s famous mountain. An Imperfect Blessing deals with issues of freedom, faith and acceptance.

Crwys-Williams asked Davids about various issues including the “hallowed ground” of District Six, Cape Town’s landscape, the “violent, squabbling” time in which her book is set, humour in writing about serious topics and the research she did, or lived, to write about the Muslim community. Davids, primarily a playwright and academic, says she simply wrote the kind of book she would like to read.

The introduction to the interview starts at 15:05. Listen to the podcast:
