Video: Damon Galgut Reads the First Chapter of Arctic Summer

Arctic SummerDamon Galgut is one of South Africa’s most acclaimed novelists. His latest work,Arctic Summer, is based on the life of EM Forster, the Edwardian author who wrote the ever popular A Passage to India.

In Arctic Summer Galgut imagines the 11 years it took Forster to write and publish this epic novel and explores the inner struggles Forster faced during that time.

Atlantic Books, Galgut’s UK publisher, has shared a video of Galgut reading from Arctic Summer. His mesmerising voice transports you to the ship that carried Forster on the first part of his adventure to India where a “young lady in search of a husband” fails to see that the young author is not interested in anything more than polite chatter.

Watch the video:

The first man, Morgan Forster, was 33 years of age and had come to think of himself as a writer.
