Sue Grant-Marshall Interviews André Brink About His Latest Novel Philida

PhilidaSue Grant-Marshall interviewed André Brink recently for the Financial Mail, and he talked with her about the genesis of his latest novel, the Man Booker Prize long-listed Philida.
Brink’s story of his own ancestor and the slave who bore him four children has deep resonances for all South Africans, in that the details of the country’s slave history have not been written about much and are not well known by all.

André Brink cuts a fine figure of a man at 77, with an abundance of hair, twinkling eyes, and a life – noted for its tempestuous affairs and several wives – that’s now enriched with a deep love of two women.

His Polish-born novelist wife Karina, tall and elegant like Brink, friendly and simpatico, is never far from his side. And never far from his thoughts is Philida, the young slave who bore four Brink children on a Franschhoek farm, nearly 200 years ago. He loves her too.
